If you’re new to journaling, let me tell you that you’re in for a treat! As I have taken the time to write down my thoughts, dreams, and especially those things I felt that God was saying to me throughout 30+ years, I have learned so much. I have been able to go back over my notes and see where He gave me answers before I even needed them. Have I gotten everything right? No. But the process also taught me how to hear Holy Spirit’s still small voice. Listening is an art … a skill that must be learned.
Practicing the skill of listening daily is the most valuable exercise in which I engage myself. Countless times Holy Spirit has made me aware of something before it happened. I may not have been completely prepared every time, but I was much more aware when things occurred. The process is simple.
Start by getting some paper or a notebook (my favorite) and something to write with. Pray and ask Holy Spirit, who was sent by God the Father – Creator of heaven and earth – at Jesus’ request, to be your teacher and guide. This is why Jesus asked the Father to send Holy Spirit to us. As you listen to the soaking music, write down what comes to mind. You can examine it after your soaking time is over. In fact, you will need to examine them in the light of scripture. We are to test the spirits, and judge the words we receive by the plumb line of the Word of God. But for now, write and let it flow. At the end of the week, take a few moments to go back over what you wrote and note those things that have proven to be important during the past week. You remember how you were able to discern the voice of a loved one over the phone even though you couldn’t see him or her? You spent time with them – LOTS of time. The more time you spend engaging with God as you soak in His presence, the more clearly you will hear and the easier it will be to recognize His voice. Jesus said,
My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me (John 10:27, NKJV).
So be assured that as you soak, as you listen, as you journal, and then study the Word you will be growing in your relationship with Him.
